Zyra Protein has launched its chocolate protein powder on Walmart.com, marking a deliberate shift in distribution strategy after the brand stepped away from Amazon. The move places the plant-based startup inside one of the largest retail marketplaces in the United States and signals a recalibration of how the company intends to reach consumers.

The chocolate SKU is priced at $26.00 on the brand's own direct-to-consumer site and is built around a pea protein base developed after nearly a year of R&D, per the company. A strawberry variety is currently sold out on the DTC site and is expected to follow on Walmart Marketplace. Founder and CEO Mario West, a graduate of Towson University and Liberty University, launched Zyra Protein in 2024 after previously operating a baking mix business. West has said publicly that departing Amazon reinforced a broader lesson for early-stage founders: not every sales channel suits every brand.

Zyra Protein positions itself around a clean-label, allergen-free formulation and a social mission. The company donates a percentage of gross sales to underserved communities and has implemented internal profit-sharing programs, per the company. West has also expressed ambitions to expand into physical retail, inviting potential store partners to contact the brand directly.

Why it matters

The decision to anchor growth on Walmart Marketplace rather than Amazon reflects a tension that is widening across the protein supplement category. Amazon's platform carries enormous volume but also intense price competition, a high burden of review generation, and advertising costs that can compress margins severely for early-stage brands. Walmart's e-commerce channel, while smaller in absolute scale, offers a differentiated consumer demographic and reduced direct competition from established supplement incumbents. For independent CPG brands at the earliest stages, channel selection is increasingly a strategic identity decision as much as a logistics one. A two-SKU plant-based protein brand electing to plant its flag on Walmart Marketplace rather than the default Amazon path is a signal worth tracking across the broader better-for-you nutrition space.

What to watch

Whether Zyra Protein can convert Walmart.com traction into a physical store listing is the open question this move leaves unresolved. The brand has invited retail partners to contact it directly about stocking requests, indicating that brick-and-mortar placement is an active ambition. A transition from marketplace SKU to in-store shelf space would represent a substantially more demanding commercial test, requiring volume commitments, logistics infrastructure, and retailer sell-through data that a young brand may still be assembling. The rollout of the strawberry SKU on Walmart will serve as an early indicator of whether the channel is performing.
