KEANU, an instant noble kava brand founded by former Lazard banker Alex Russell, has secured investment from Noetic Fund and is moving to expand distribution beyond its direct-to-consumer channel, betting that kava can grow into a mainstream social beverage category in the United States.

The brand sources its kava directly from farmers in Vanuatu and positions its product as a non-alcoholic social drink. Early demand indicators point to an audience primed for it: the first product drop sold out in 67 minutes and more than 3,000 consumers joined an early access waitlist. Russell developed the brand after spending years studying kava across Vanuatu, Fiji, New Caledonia and Hawaii. KEANU uses traditional noble kava rather than the highly concentrated extracts found in some competing products, a formulation choice that reflects a deliberate positioning closer to cultural authenticity than the supplement aisle.

The company currently sells direct-to-consumer. Per the company, it has also produced what it describes as award-winning kava media, the first of its kind, as part of an effort to build consumer education around the category's Pacific heritage alongside the product itself.

Why it matters

Kava has circulated on the fringes of the U.S. beverage market for years, largely confined to specialty kava bars and wellness enthusiasts. KEANU's framing of kava as a social, alcohol-alternative beverage rather than a functional supplement marks a meaningful strategic shift in how the category could be presented to mainstream retail buyers. The Noetic Fund investment, combined with the brand's stated intent to move beyond DTC, signals a genuine retail expansion play at a moment when interest in non-alcoholic social drinks is drawing significant capital across the broader beverage landscape. For kava specifically, the persistent barrier has been consumer education and format accessibility. An instant noble kava format, sold through channels familiar to American consumers, addresses both constraints at once.

What to watch

The central open question is whether KEANU can translate DTC waitlist enthusiasm into repeatable retail velocity once it competes for shelf space alongside a crowded field of functional and non-alcoholic beverages. Brick-and-mortar distribution requires carrying category-education work into an environment where the brand cannot control the consumer experience as directly as it can online. The retail partners KEANU chooses following the Noetic Fund investment, and the pace at which it closes those agreements, will be the clearest early signal of whether kava is positioned for a genuine mass-market moment or remains a high-interest niche.
