Originally reported by WWD.

Authentic Brands Group has completed its acquisition of the intellectual property of Lee from Kontoor Brands, the parent company of Wrangler, in a deal valued at up to $1 billion, as first reported by WWD on November 3.

Per the company, Lee generates approximately $1.5 billion in annual retail-equivalent sales across 73 countries, with nearly 40 percent of that volume coming from outside the U.S. and Canada. ABG's portfolio already spans Dockers, Reebok, Champion, Guess, Lucky Brand, Aeropostale and Nautica, and the company says its brands collectively drive more than $38 billion in annual systemwide sales through a network of more than 1,700 licensees and strategic partners across 150 countries. Jamie Salter, founder and executive chairman of ABG, told WWD that the company sees "a significant opportunity to expand its reach through content, experiences and new product categories."

ABG has already assembled regional operating partners to run Lee through its licensing model. According to WWD, those include One Jeanswear Group for the U.S. and Canada, Experience Group for Europe, HiMaxx for mainland China, Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR, and Union Group for Mexico. Additional licensees are expected to extend Lee into activewear, workwear and lifestyle categories. Per ABG, Lee's operations will remain headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Why it matters

The acquisition illustrates how brand management platforms continue to absorb heritage apparel labels, separating IP ownership from manufacturing and distribution. Lee spent nearly 50 years inside VF Corporation's Jeanswear division before spinning off in 2019 as Kontoor Brands; under ABG, the brand shifts to a fully licensed structure. That model prioritizes global reach and category extension over direct operations, and the roster of regional partners ABG has already lined up, covering North America, Europe, China and Mexico, signals an intent to accelerate international penetration from day one. For Kontoor, the sale exits a major heritage brand; the company retains Wrangler as a key label.

What to watch

The open question is whether ABG's licensing model can sustain and grow Lee's approximately $1.5 billion in annual retail-equivalent sales as the brand moves into adjacent categories such as activewear and workwear, segments that represent new expansion territory for Lee under ABG's licensing model.
