Beyond Meat has launched Phytosphere, a new protein portfolio that carries the company well outside its founding category of plant-based meat alternatives. The lineup, which went live direct-to-consumer on September 9, spans four product formats: Starmatter protein powder, Starcut savory bars, Beyond Immerse sparkling protein drinks, and a Beyond Veggie burger made with more than ten fruits and vegetables.

The Phytosphere launch consolidates several product lines that Beyond had been building separately. Beyond Immerse, the company's first functional beverage line, debuted in New York in June 2026 and reached Erewhon by August. A distribution agreement with Big Geyser, announced in April 2026, gave Beyond Immerse access to more than 26,000 outlets across the New York metro area. Folding that beverage into a broader nutrition platform signals that the company views the drink as part of a system rather than a standalone bet.

Beyond has been repositioning under the banner "the Plant Protein Company," a shift reflected in its homepage language and the new portfolio's architecture, which targets protein occasions across dayparts, from powders and bars as snack and supplement replacements to a center-of-plate veggie burger. The company says its plant proteins are sourced from ingredients including yellow peas, red lentils, and faba beans, with no GMOs and no added hormones or antibiotics, per the company.

Why it matters

For years, plant-based meat brands competed primarily on taste parity with conventional ground beef and sausage. The Phytosphere launch marks a deliberate pivot toward the broader functional nutrition market, placing Beyond in direct competition with established sports and wellness protein brands rather than just conventional meat. If the repositioning holds, it could give the company a defensible position in a higher-margin, faster-growing segment at a time when the legacy plant-based burger category has faced well-documented consumer fatigue.

What to watch

The DTC launch gives Beyond early signal on which Phytosphere SKUs resonate before committing to retail shelf space. The open question is how quickly, and through which retail partners, the company will push the full portfolio into stores. Beyond Steak Filet's retail rollout, which moved from DTC to Wegmans, H-E-B, and Meijer within months, offers one possible template, but protein powder and bars compete in far more crowded aisles.
